What does reconciliation look like in the aerospace industry?
My name is Ciara Browne, and I am an aspiring aerospace engineer. I have made it my goal to incorporate reconciliation into my future career. By asking the above question, I am enabling myself to research potential methods of reconciliation that I may utilize as an aerospace engineer. To approach this topic, I have chosen three themes - Education, Environment, and Gender Equality - that I will be using to structure my research. I have found three guiding statements about reconciliation, listed below, that define what aspects of reconciliation I will attempt to incorporate into my career.
Themes of Reconciliation
EducationTruth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action, #12: "We call upon the federal, provincial, territorial, and Aboriginal governments to develop culturally appropriate early childhood education programs for Aboriginal families." I chose this statement as a driving research theme for my project because early education is the foundation for inclusion in STEM careers. By introducing STEM concepts to Indigenous children in culturally appropriate methods, the potential of a marginalized group in STEM becomes enabled. |
Environment United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Article 29, #1: "Indigenous peoples have the right to the conservation and protection of the environment and the productive capacity of their lands or territories and resources. States shall establish and implement assistance programs for indigenous peoples for such conservation and protection, without discrimination." I chose this statement as a driving research theme for my project because of the environment's fundamental importance to humanity. By including Indigenous perspectives in STEM discussions, an opportunity for moral conservation is created. |
Gender EqualityUnited Nations Gender and Indigenous Peoples Report, Briefing #2 (Economic and Social Development): "Increased employment for indigenous women: States should develop policies to promote special measures for the improvement of indigenous women’s economic and social conditions through the expansion of employment opportunities." I chose this statement as a driving research theme for my project because of the importance of creating opportunities for equity-deserving groups. By increasing employment opportunities for Indigenous women, their perspectives will be more effectively advocated for in professional discussions. |
MY GOAL
To Learn How to Incorporate Reconciliation into the Aerospace Industry
Research Topic #1:What's Already Happening
I will investigate what steps have been/are currently being taken to incorporate reconciliation into the aerospace industry.
|
Research Topic #2Comparing Perspectives
I will compare the perspectives of Indigenous and non-Indigenous voices on the topic of reconciliation in the aerospace industry.
|
Research Topic #3What Should Happen
I will define some possible next steps in the journey of incorporating reconciliation in the aerospace industry.
